PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A man was shot and robbed of possessions worth thousands of dollars on Federal Hill early Monday.

Providence police were called to Atwells Avenue at about 1 a.m. after a state police trooper reported a shooting.

Officers met with a man who was parked outside of the Walgreens store. He told police he was in his white Bentley Continental with his girlfriend, when a man approached the drivers side door while it was ajar.

He claimed the man held a gun to him and demanded him to hand over any valuables. A shot was fired before he had a chance to hand anything over.

He said the man then grabbed a Presidential Rolex watch, estimated to be worth $40,000, and two Cuban link chains, worth about $16,000 each.

Officers said the man then took off through the Walgreens parking lot onto Spruce Street.

Police said the trooper took the shooting victim to Rhode Island Hospital himself because of “urgent circumstances.” His injury was non-life-threatening.

The investigation into the incident is active and ongoing.
