What We Know

Vacheron Constantin is delivering a double dose of news today. And it’s not just a new watch, but a partnership as a part of the “One of Not Many” campaign for the Overseas collection alongside Cory Richards. Let’s start with the watch.

The brand’s 35mm Overseas lineup is relatively young (announced at Watches & Wonders this year) and VC has already announced two downsized variations of the brand’s third-generation case shape in steel and pink gold, with and without diamonds. Those watches came with blue dials (except for the diamond-set steel which sported a pink dial). Now there’s a new and pretty classically-striking option with a 35mm Overseas in pink gold with matching gold dial and yes, still 90 diamonds on the bezel.

The watch is 9.33mm thick and comes on an 18k pink gold bracelet with an included white calfskin leather strap with tone-on-tone stitches, easily swapped with Vacheron’s interchangeable strap system. Inside is the caliber Calibre 1088/1, powering the hours, minutes, seconds, and date, with around 40 hours of power reserve.

The other news is the announcement that American artist Zaria Forman will be joining musician Benjamin Clementine, designer Ora Ito, photographer and explorer Cory Richards and Haute Couture designer Yiqing Yin as part of the brand’s “One Of Not Many” campaign. Forman is based in New York, but travels to remote regions, camera in hand, documenting changing landscapes. Then she returns to her studio and reproduces the landscapes and the details she observed in pastel on large-format paper. These works have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world.

Forman’s work isn’t just about the beauty of our world, but it’s fragility. She took part in Banksy’s Dismaland, a gloomy “funfair” about the decadent excesses of our society. She was an artist-in-residence aboard the National Geographic Explorer in Antarctica and was responsible for the very first permanent exhibitions of polar art on Lindblad Expedition’s National Geographic Endurance and National Geographic Resolution ships. She also has flown several times with NASA’s Operation IceBridge, airborne scientific missions over Antarctica, Greenland and the Canadian Arctic, which have helped to map changes in earth’s ice over the last decade. It’s a good reminder that while watches are a great distraction from the seriousness of issues surrounding us, they don’t make those issues disappear completely.

Forman’s work is incredibly stunning, and I’m looking forward to getting out in the world and seeing where she draws inspiration from in Iceland this week. As for the watch, the retail price is $58,500.

What We Think

There have been some cool and bold releases from Vacheron this year but it wasn’t immediately obvious, to me at least, how big of a difference the Overseas going from 37.5mm to 35mm might make. Until I finally got to try one on.

Not my wrist, though I promise it is nearly as elegant.

People seem to think there’s a secret cabal of watch writers and executives working together to push smaller case sizes on people who don’t want them. If there is, I’m either doing a terrible job at it or not getting my paycheck in the mail. I’ve been known to wear watches down to 32mm. Vacheron Constantin has been very intentional not to “gender” these releases. You don’t have to wear small watches if you don’t want to, I promise. And yet, I was pretty surprised at how well a 34.5mm (the size of the non-gemset version) wears when I saw it a few months ago for the first time.

I’ll admit that as a 6’7″ man, regardless of any external marketing decisions I’m probably not the target audience for a 35mm pink gold sports watch with 90 diamonds on the bezel. Yet, if it was a vintage 36mm Day-Date I might not bat an eye, something I’ll try to unpack when I see the watch in person later today. Who knows, maybe there’s a bit of brand-agnostic blinginess in me after all.
