Travis Kelce is one of the best pass catchers in the NFL and gets paid pretty handsomely, too.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end is a two-time Super Bowl winner who signed a four-year contract in 2020 worth $57.25million.

Kelce has not always been so well off, however, and has only himself to blame earlier on in his NFL career.

The Chiefs selected him in the third round in 2013 and he got a signing bonus of around $800,000.

As someone who was fresh out of college, where he could not make any money, it is perhaps understandable that he made some extravagant purchases.

The top of that list was a pair Nike Air Mags, that were replicas of the shoes worn by Marty McFly in Back To The Future II.

Nike auctioned 1500 pairs of the shoes on eBay in 2011, with the proceeds going to the Michael J Fox Foundation.

Kelce bought a pair of these from a reseller and also spent money on a Rolex, leaving him pretty broke soon after.

In 2021, he said: “I was walking into this empty apartment with Marty McFlys on and a Rolex. I felt like I was the coolest guy in the world.”

Speaking to his brother Jason, the Philadelphia Eagles centre, on their podcast he said:  “I was slotted in the first pick of the third round to get around $800k, so I ended up receiving around $500k to $600k, after taxes and everything.

“The only thing I’ve got left to show for that is a pair of my favourite shoes.

“First thing I did, I had my eyes on a pair of size 13 Nike Air Mag Marty McFlys, the coolest shoes I’d ever seen in my life. As soon as I got my cheque I immediately went online and sourced them.

“I’d always wanted those shoes, I’d always been a big Nike guy and watching Back To The Future so many frickin’ times and seeing what the Nikes would look like in the future and the fact they were anti-gravity and self-tying.”

Jason said: “Somebody told me you had bought those shoes and I looked up how much they were and I remember being like ‘what the f***, Travis’.”

Travis added: “I have nothing else to show for that first cheque. I felt so f***ing stupid. I remember you asking me after my first or second year ‘hey, what are you doing with your money’.

“And me saying ‘I’m kind of broke right now’.

“I got my signing bonus before the season started and I didn’t realise you get your game cheques every week.

“After the season, you don’t get paid until August next year. I was damned near dead broke.

“The dumbest thing I bought in my rookie year was bottles in the club. I spent way too much money in clubs and I was avoiding the rent lady because I was stupid enough to buy all those bottles.”

Kelce is no doubt a future NFL Hall of Famer and has been paid pretty handsomely since his rookie days.

With his contract set to expire in 2024, there is probably still one more payday left for the best tight end in the NFL.
